Umino Iruka is an instructor at the ninja academy. Introduced as Uzumaki Naruto's sensei, he and Naruto have a special connection. Iruka sees himself in Naruto because he also grew up as an orphan and was around Naruto's current age when his parents were killed by the Kyūbi; Naruto cares for him because Iruka was the first person to acknowledge him as a precious person, and Naruto sees Iruka as a father. Worrying that Naruto is being pushed too hard, Iruka often underestimates Naruto's abilities during his trials to become a great ninja. He was also Konohamaru's teacher at the ninja academy.

Trivia

In the first data book, Iruka's age is 25 and his registration number is 011450. The data book doesn't give a surname for Iruka.

The name "Umino Iruka" can be taken as "umi no iruka" ("sea dolphin").

According to the official databook Iruka's favourite food is the same as Naruto's, Ramen (in particular, ramen from Ichiraku Ramen Bar); his least favourite food is Maze-gohan (rice with steamed vegetables). His hobby is going to the hot springs and his favorite phrase is "Faith".
It is interesting to note that even though he doesn't appear that often in the anime and manga, Iruka is constantly in the Top 10 favourite character polls.
