The Things We Do

<img:stuff/divider.jpg>
A summary based on the accounts of a soldier
<img:stuff/divider.jpg>

We shall start this little bit off with a few words that every soldier knows and holds dear...

The Soldier's Creed:

I am an American Soldier.
I am a Warrior and a member of a team.
I serve the people of the United States and
live the Army Values.

I will always place the mission first.
I will never accept defeat.
I will never quit.
I will never leave a fallen comrade.

I am disciplined, physically and mentally tough, trained and proficient in my warrior tasks and drills. I always maintain my arms, my equipment and myself.
I am an expert and I am a professional.
I stand ready to deploy, engage, and destroy the enemies of the United States of America in close combat.
I am a guardian of freedom and the American way of life.
I am an American Soldier.

Ok...

We as soldiers are sometimes asked to do what would be considered unthinkable to most people...

Now and then we are asked to:

Leave our families for months on end.
To travel to places where we are hated and despised.
To go on those missions knowing we might not survive.
To be ready and able to kill another human being.

To the average person, these things seem unreal. But as a soldier it is nothing more than part of our job, as undesireable as it may be, we do it. And do it with honor.

There are even some individuals that would go as far to say that we are evil men, lacking a soul and killing with complete indiscresion. We have fought and even died so that you can have the freedom to think that way and say those things.

And its not like we are forced to go, we volunteer knowing full well that one day we may be called upon to serve in those places, doing those things.

I myself am a soldier, my task, to make certain that my company of 120 men has working communication equipment at all times. This is neither a glorious nor simply job but it is nessesary to maintain the functionality of my unit. I take great pride in my work, ensuring that my comrades in arms are able to communicate efficiently so that they may return from their mission without consequence.

So to those of you whom are soldiers,

Hooah, Hoorah, Semper Fi, Aim High, and such.

And to those of you whom are not, do not look down upon us. We don't want your praise or your malice...just your respect.

Thank you, SPC Glen [Orestez] Whisler, US ARMY 1-161 Inf
