Google has changed, so this is pretty much not working anymore. Contest closed.

This is a contest always open for any Elfpacker to enter. You just have to create an interesting wiki-page that draws attention to Elfpack, and you can win donor-privileges (for you or to give away).

Rules

§1 The goal is to create an interesting wiki-page that makes non-Elfpackers come to Elfpack.

§2 The page should be somewhat "Elfpackish". That means that it should be fun, cool or just interesting for people who are likely to become Elfpackers. It must not contain any porn, racism or other unwanted stuff (Ask [Hedda] if you're unsure!).

§3 If your page has attracted approximately 1000 people to look at Elfpack, you'll get the prize of a donor-privilege for you or one that you can give away.

§4 The wiki-page must of course be exported, otherwise it can't be found by non-Elfpackers.

§5 [Hedda] will try to spot popular pages, but comment on this page to be sure. If you do and your page is good enough, you'll get some help to make it known.

Hints

Try to make a page about something that no one else has done a page about! Of course your page will be extremely popular if it's the best page about "sex", but it's very unlikely that you'll succeed in that. Here are some examples of pages that are successful:

www.linkmeet.com/_rydstider - It contains all the opening hours in a suburb of the town Linköping in Sweden. It gets about 5 hits a day, which would have given 1000 hits in only 200 days.

www.cathug.com/3 - It contains an image of Lilo having sex with Birk. It and it's subpages are getting 4000-8000 hits a day from Google's image-search.

www.cathug.com/_cat%20names Contains a list of cat names. Gets 50 hits a week.

Scak gets 10 hits per day for some strange reason...

AC3 has a lot of photos that have generated some 133 hits from new people in a month.

Some other pages with over 10 hits per day:
http://elftown.eu/_Perverted%20Jokes
http://elftown.eu/_medieval%20ranks
http://elftown.eu/_eye%20tutorial
http://www.linkmeet.com/_fat (People are searching for "Fat people", "Italian guy" or "Finnish girl" in Google's image-search. The first will get unlucky though as "fat" here is "(beer) barrel(s)" in Swedish, not fat.)
http://www.writersco.com/_Canadian%20Agents

So there are many ways to make something useful and unique. Anything from lists of bands playing Emo Japanese Metal to a photo album of all the flowers you can find in the streets of Manhattan. If have something good about a few (2) very specific keywords, it can often be one of the best pages in the world about that particular subject.

More ideas: Describe your school with pictures. Or your village. Make sure to name the wiki-page well. Like for example Elfpack University Photos.

Current status

2006-12-06 The contest has begun.

2007-07-04 [Whiskers] won a donor-prize prize for his excellent page Dir en Grey Translated Lyrics.

2008-10-04 [Velvet Dreams] won donor-prize prize for his fancy page Gothic Fairy Adoption Center. (Google's image-search happily took that bait)

2008-09-24 [DeeJay™]: are all exported wikis entered into this by default? or would one have to declare their wiki beforehand?

2008-09-25 [Hedda]: Basically every page is included as I look at which pages that are well visited by new visitors. But you should tell us and you might get some help.

2008-09-25 [DeeJay™]: oooh.. how do you do that? xD
do the rest of us know? or just you?

2008-09-25 [Hedda]: I check the logs. They aren't public information.

2008-09-25 [DeeJay™]: okay, cool :]
well, i would hope that the new 'Top 10' would draw a few folks into EP. it's filled with songs this week ^^

2008-09-26 [Hedda]: You can use the stumble-button and make links to it from other sites. Link to the exported wiki-page, because it's shorter and generally better.

2008-09-26 [DeeJay™]: uhh.. okay o.o
i'll see what i can find :3

2008-09-28 [Faith.Hope.Love]: You can use the stumble-button and make links to it from other sites.

[Hedda], would you mind explaining this a bit more? I would really like to understand this better. I have tried placing high ranking links on some of my wiki pages, but I haven't noticed a significant difference in how they come up in the Google searches. I try to read everything I come across on this topic, including what you have written in various places, but I don't think I'm getting it entirely. <img:sa-gif.gif> I also use your recommended format with the title and the keywords as well.

2008-09-29 [DeeJay™]: uh, what i did was actually click the 'stumble' button (next to the words 'wiki-page rating'), and write a short review on my wiki, before signing up (got to, unfortunately :\ but watch out for the toolbar they try to install), and then confirm it through my email.
i dont know if it's actually made a difference, mind.. x]

2008-09-29 [Hedda]: [Faith.Hope.Love]: You need to link to it from a high ranked page, before it really makes a difference. It's extra good if it's a relevant page but on a site otherwise not related, I guess. But it's hard to know exactly how Google does this, and they update the algoritm all the time. But if it's easy to find for people reading about the subject everywhere else, then it's probably good.

[DeeJay™]: If the ones Stumbling around like it, then it might become very popular. If not... It will give a few clicks. Many people submitting it is better, I guess.

2008-10-01 [Faith.Hope.Love]: You need to link to it from a high ranked page...

Ahh! The keyword being 'from' a high ranked page, instead of 'to' a high ranked page. Now I understand the significance of getting my Pegasus image linked 'from' PegasusLair2000 to Elftown's Pegasus, because PegasusLair2000 is a very high ranked page. Correct? Hmm..... <img:cheshmak.gif>

2008-10-03 [Hedda]: No, it's not a high ranked page at the moment and I doubt it will ever be. But links are never bad.

www.elfwood.com is a high ranked page for example. If you have a Google toolbar you can see the page-rank of the pages you're visiting.

2008-10-05 [Faith.Hope.Love]: So it has nothing to do with coming up as the 4th listed from the top of the page for "Pegasus Art" for a 'web' search and listed first for an 'image' search (even though the image 'shown' links back to elftown.eu/_Pegasus)? I had a Google Toolbar and I did away with it, not sure why. I'll get it again, because I really like to do searches periodically. I do see Elfwood a lot in my searches. Almost applied there a few times, but I changed my mind. I didn't think my art would be acceptable there. What I find really interesting? Your Elftown photo is on a couple of pages. When I clicked on it, I was taken to my ET house. Hmmm.... <img:BR-GIF.gif>

2008-10-06 [Hedda]: It has something to do with coming up 4th listed from the top, yes. But it's still not a highly ranked page.

2008-10-08 [Faith.Hope.Love]: I see.. I think. ;) I downloaded the Google Toolbar. I see that site is at 3/10 for Google's rating of its importance. Mainstuff registers at the same as well as Mainstreet on ET. I was surprised to see that my ET house has a ranking at all. http://www.wikipedia.org/ is at 9/10, but I kinda' expected this ranking for wikipedia. Interesting. <img:mood-gif.gif>

Off topic: I want to download another browser, because I often use 2 browsers at a time, currently Firefox and IE. I so dislike IE, though. Does Opera support images? <img:c-gif.gif>

2011-10-06 [DeeJay™]: do you think there's a chance of my EP Independent's Top 10: Internet Games wiki being featured? i googled 'top 10 internet games' and it was on page 2 (of over a million pages). i'd imagine 'internet games' would be a popular search, and 'top 10 internet games' is linked from that search as the first one
(e.g. "Searches related to internet games:
top 10 internet games
online games
multiplayer internet games
flash games
etc).
think there's a chance?

2011-10-06 [kittykittykitty]: Yeah I found it on the 2nd page too, nice one C:

2011-11-07 [Stephen]: Is this contest still being monitored?

2011-11-08 [DeeJay™]: is anything..?

2011-11-08 [Stephen]: Lots of things are, now. :P

2011-11-09 [kittykittykitty]: I'm not sure how we see which pages are most popular. Hedda?:)
