History- Kitty is the second eldest of the Walker family. Kitty shared the conservative beliefs of her father, William, and brother, Tommy. Being Republican, Kitty always clashed with her mother, Nora, who is more liberal. Even though they love each other, their relationship is somewhat complicated.
One of the reasons for their misunderstanding was because of younger brother Justin. Kitty supported his decision to join the army whereas Nora was completely against it, especially after Justin was deployed to Afghanistan. From that point until Kitty's return to Los Angeles the two had barely spoken to each other. Until she returned for a visit for her birthday, Kitty had not been home in several years. She had been living in New York City, and witnessed the fall of the Twin Towers during the September 11 attacks. She has moved from New York to live with her mother, to help her to coop with the death of William Walker. She is also on TV, on a politics show.

History-Tommy is the third child and firstborn son of Nora Holden Walker and the late William Walker. Like his father, Tommy is a conservative Republican, though this is rarely touched on with the exception of the backstory of when his younger brother Kevin came out of the closet he was the one who was the least accepting of the news. Tommy is married to Julia Walker. Tommy spent years working under his father and his uncle, Saul Holden, at Ojai Foods, hoping he would be able to take over the business someday. After his sister Sarah decided to leave her own high-stakes corporate career behind and work for her father's company to spend more time with her husband and kids, William gave her more and more power in the company, making Tommy feel less important.

History-Kevin, is a lawyer, and the fourth child of William and Nora Walker (the siblings are, in birth order, Sarah, Kitty, Tommy, Kevin, and Justin). Kevin's first sexual experience was with a girl, but by the next summer he had sex with a boy, Tucker Booth, at his family's ranch house (Tucker also deflowered Sarah and was the first person to do drugs with Justin, but Kevin likely knew none of this). When Kevin was a senior in high school, he began seeing a boy named Danny G. McCullough. Danny's sister found out about the relationship and told Kitty. Kevin swore Kitty to secrecy, but by that Christmas she had told the other siblings. Kevin then told his mother, and she quickly joined PFLAG. Years later, Kevin would express some bitterness at how this had unfolded, saying he had felt like "an exchange student in his own home." He also reveals a crush he had on fellow student Matthew Brown; he joined everything Brown joined from Future Farmers of America (Brown apparently grew a prize winning pumpkin) to the golf team. Kevin eventually became a successful lawyer, but failed to make partner. He was out to his family as well as to the legal world, but struggled with romantic relationships. Several years later, Kevin was in a relationship with another man which ended with enough regret that Kevin kept a framed photo of the two of them in his office. Kevin also implied that in his past, he had had problems staying faithful in a relationship and slept around with other random men at times.

History-Justin is the youngest child of Nora and William Walker, and often feels over-protected by his parents and siblings. When Justin was in his early teens, a family friend named Tucker Booth introduced him to drugs. After September 11, when Kitty returned from New York to stay with her family, she confides to Justin her experiences and fears stemming from that catastrophic event. It was for these reasons that he was compelled to join the Army. When he returned from Afghanistan, he suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, leading to his drug addiction. Nora blamed Kitty for encouraging Justin to join the army, leading to their estrangement.
